Advocacy
Over 400 older adults and their families from across the state came together at the Capitol to make their voices heard in support of aging programs and services. Their message is BE THERE 4 SENIORS! Deeper budget cuts to aging programs still threaten services to at-risk seniors due to Georgia’s budget crisis in the current economic downturn.
The cuts are compounded by the facts that • the older adult population has begun to double; • volunteerism has chilled due to rising food, energy and fuel costs; and • cost-saving prevention programs have been eliminated.
Providers are finding it impossible to serve more people with less money or to encourage families with respite care so that they are not forced to turn to the state for assistance.
Georgia’s older adults are in the middle of a perfect storm and they are asking legislators to at least protect and restore funding for meals for at-risk seniors and for respite care programs which help families take care of their own!
